January 31st, 2009 Thailand’s Capital City
Bangkok was voted the “World’s Best City” in 2008 and this Thai capital has a lot to offer visitors. No wonder it has become one of the top tourist destinations in Asia. Bangkok seamlessly blends its ancient traditions with modern sensibilities. For example the city houses both traditional architecture and over one thousand modern skyscrapers. The city was once known as the “Venice of the East” and there are still a number of khlongs (canals) in use, though many have been replaced by regular roads.
As the capital of Thailand, Bangkok is home to the National Theater, the National Gallery, and the National Museum. The House of Parliment is also in Bangkok as is the Grand Palace which is the official resident of the Thai Royal Family. Every year the city holds large celebrations honoring the birthdays of the King (in December) and the Queen (in August) that you have to see to believe.
Shopping in Bangkok is a bargain-hunters dream. Many prices are significantly lower than in western capitals and pretty much any price is meant to be haggled. The food in Thailand is amazing. Be sure to sample local dishes whenever possible, though there are a number of restaurants in the city offering cuisines from other parts of the world. There are plenty of hotels to choose from in Bangkok. In addition to familiar chains and local inns, there are a number of luxury five star hotels in Bangkok. When it comes to shopping, food, and lodging, in Bangkok there really is something for everyone.
Other attractions in Bangkok include the Ancient City, the Chalerm Krung Theater, the Bangkok Metropolitan Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Thailand Cultural Center. In addition to many religious and cultural festivals, Bangkok hosts two international film festivals and celebrates the Bangkok Songkran Festival (traditional Thai New Year). The city has many parks for relaxation and recreation and several wildlife sanctuaries featuring a variety of reptiles, snakes, and animals.
