August 5th, 2010 Lighting: Place and Context
Every lighting designer learns that when considering the nature of their work, the most essential function of their work is simply illumination. Lights help people to see in the dark. It seems like a simple concept, but it’s also one that changes vastly over time. From the move from candlelight to gas lamps, and then to electricity, the perception of light has changed. Today, it’s much easier to give illumination to an entire area, but that doesn’t mean it’s necessarily simpler. Being able to focus on one or more areas, and blocking out others, is one of the many challenges in helping people to see.
It is much the same with outdoor lighting. Like a stage, a yard can become a showplace during parties, or it can become a place of enchantment while one is home alone, enjoying the view outdoors. There are companies who have been in the practice of making gorgeous outdoor lighting for a long time, and kichler outdoor lighting is one company that stresses design as much as functionality. This is essential in a beautiful place, because outdoor lighting is every bit as much of an aesthetic choice as it is a practical one. One needn’t know all the principles of color in light design to make a lovely place in the home, especially when the tools do most of the work.
