July 29th, 2009 Ice in Dubai
I got to experience a memorable and fun time at the Ski Dubai Snow Park. All I heard from everyone of my friends that have been there told me it’s a must see and do before you die kind of thing. I don’t know about that it’s ‘that’ kind of experience one needs to have before they die, but it was interesting to say the least.
I managed to go with a few of my other friends that just flew in for the weekend and wanted me to take they there. Since I’ve never been there myself, I thought, why not. I picked them up at the Five Star Hotel in Dubai after they had a chance to rest from the flight. When we arrived at Ski Dubai and went inside, it reminded me of the biggest freezer in the world. As we donned our ski gear, we went inside this big freezer. It was definitely cold, a big chill set in right away, but we all got used to it quickly. There’s more than snow here, I mostly saw a lot of ice, like a big ice dragon sculpture, chairs carved out of ice and, of course, icicles.
After we gawked around a while, we realised that there wasn’t much to do inside. There were several slopes for bobsleds, which by the way, did pump up our adrenaline. But, the adrenaline rush went away only after two runs. We couldn’t pick up the snow to make snowballs and have a snowball fight because it’s against the rules. I would think they could set aside an area just for snowball fights, but, for some reason they haven’t. But, to be honest, there really wasn’t enough snow to pick up and have a good snowball fight anyway. I don’t ski, but my friends do. So, I waited, sat on an ice chair, very not comfortable, while they checked out the snow slopes. They came back in a hour with huge smiles on their faces and said it was really fun, but not the same as skiing outdoors. They did recommend that I take some ski lessons, which are offered there, so next time I could really enjoy the best part about the Snow Park. Maybe next time I will, because as soon as we stepped outside we were greeted by the scorching heat.
