Now that the idea of a cultural haven has become more complex, where there is no one center in the country, the spectacular cities have a chance to enter into their own. This is as true for Los Angeles as it is for New York. There is cultural expression and artistic output in nearly every large city, and none stands higher than the rest. In terms of sheer numbers, of course, these cities have the most concentrated populations of artists and writers, but it’s become more of a local phenomenon lately than a national one. Looking at the Beat Scene in L.A., for example, one finds a subculture that avoided mainstream acceptance at any costs, and remains fiercely local.

This doesn’t necessarily mean there aren’t national and international treasures in the city. A jaunt around town with a Go Los Angeles Card will reveal plenty of hidden treasure, and the kinds of attractions one would hope to expect from the film capital. At the same time, the strength of its neighborhoods, and its local artists and writers, are becoming important in their own rite. Los Angeles is one of the world’s great cities, then, with something to offer everyone, and enough of a beaten track to make it possible for new things to emerge with every generation.

Seattle is a dynamic and exciting city that also offers a wealth of natural attractions. The city itself is an eclectic mix of concert halls, farmers markets, coffee houses, impressive museums, innovative restaurants, and exciting districts. Outside Seattle are glorious mountains , beautiful lakes, and serene ocean waters.

Many people come to Seattle for work. Corporations that call Seattle home include Amazon.com, Microsoft, T-Mobile USA, Nordstrom, Boeing, and Washington Mutual. The city is at the forefront of healthcare, manufacturing and information technology. with it’s proximity to the sea, it is ideally located for fishing, transportation, and ship building. Many people relocation to the city for new jobs or as transfers, staying in Seattle hotels until they can find a more permanent residence.

The city’s cultural life is eclectic. The city is the birthplace of both Jimi Hendrix and grunge music. Today there are a variety of music events and festivals for everything from jazz to indie rock with the Northwest Folklife Festival celebrating regional musicians.

Seattle has over 400 parks and is home to attractions as varied as the Space Needle, the Woodland Park Zoo, and the Pike Place Market.

Canada’s Top Literary Festival

Tickets are already on sale for the Vancouver International Writers & Readers Festival, which will be held October 19th through 24th on Granville Island. More than 100 of the top Canadian and international authors will participate in 68 events celebrating A World of Words. Countries represented in 2010 include the United States, the UK, France, Ireland, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Israel and Pakistan as well as the host country.

Some of the featured writers include David Mitchell (whose first event sold out and has added a second event to the schedule), Man Booker Prize finalists Emma Donoghue and Andrea Levy, Camilla Gibb, Andrew O’Hagan, Kate Pullinger, Marc Levy and Caroline Adderson. American writers include Pulitzer Prize winner Paul Harding, Eells Tower, and Yiyun Li. Expect the unexpected as authors appear in panel discussions, on-stage interviews and musical collaborations. The casual atmosphere of the event often leads to unscripted surprises that delight the audience. Book lovers are encouraged to book rooms in luxury Vancouver hotels while there are still spots available.

The Festival will feature a special tribute to Paul Quarrington , a beloved novelist, screenwriter, non-fiction author, and musician who died earlier in 2010. The tribute will include a documentary made during the artist’s final months. The event closes with a tribute to Penguin books, which is celebrating its 75th Anniversary. There is also a separate program for schools with 34 events, in both English and French, expected to involved 7000 Canadian students.

London Has Something for Everyone

London is England’s capital city and one of the world’s leading finance, business and cultural centers as well as being an influence on politics, entertainment, education, fashion, media and culture.

London is a great location for tourists, especially with all the museums and galleries to visit including the Natural History Museum , which opened its doors in 1881. The museum has several excellent and outstanding exhibits including the world famous replica diplodocus skeleton, known by all Londoners as Dippy. There’s no missing Dippy’s display in museums central hall, it’s huge. Also, the museum has a blue whale skeleton on exhibit weighing in at 10 tons.

London, is an enormous city, but one that is very simple to get to by flying into Heathrow International Airport, Stanstead and Luton airports, which are connected by rail that head to some of the larger train stations including Victoria, and Euston. Driving is not recommended while visiting London due to all the congestion, but not to worry, because London has the best Underground public system and bus network to help travelers to get around the entire city with ease.

London’s exciting culture, which is sure to please everyone with its great VIP night clubs, bars and pubs for the evening and great shopping to fill up the day. Selfridge, located on Oxford Street turns shopping into an event. The Embassy nightclub is renowned as being a private members club, located on Old Burlington Street, is very expensive, hard to get into, but worth a try because you’ll be rubbing elbows with celebrities and eating excellent food served by Michelin. Both establishments are located next to a London hotel that will accommodate even the hard-to-please tourist.

Any night at Slice is a good night; the DJ spins the hottest and latest eclectic neo soul hip-hop tunes. At the same time the atmosphere is laid back but plush; cutting edge but technology, sleek furniture and warm lighting, and the best place to have great conversations with the well-healed, friendly and very fashionable locals.

Slice is located at 59 Peters Street SW in the Castleberry Hill section of town and also in downtown at 85 Poplar Street, but the one in the Castleberry Hill area feels as if it’s a hidden secret in the city while being well known. The joint gets packed and the pizza is constantly good. If you’re staying at any of the Atlanta hotels , check out Slice and try the Double Decca Becca slice, which pretty much has every topping, or the Raging Agee, which has chicken, tomatoes, blue cheese and pepperoni, you won’t be sorry you did; it’s very tasty. If you’re into sweet and salty, order the KP on a Platter, which is apricot, cream cheese, smoked turkey and mozzarella, this slice of heaven will satisfy your palette for days!

If you go to Slice during the day, there will be seating available, but on the weekend nights, it’s standing-room-only, but still order a slice of pizza! It’s worth standing up for.

Scottsdale has some of the premiere cultural attractions in the greater Phoenix area, and the Center for Performing Arts is a great example of them. It is located in one of the prime cultural centers of the city and the center is surrounded by great restaurants and popular nightclubs. It is also conveniently close to some of the city’s best shopping and the old town art gallery district. Popular contemporary restaurants like AZ 88 are the perfect place to enjoy a great meal before walking across the promenade to enjoy a performance at the center.

The five star hotels Scottsdale will have excellent information on the upcoming performances at the Center as well as other top establishments in the city. Some of the Center’s featured performers include Hiromi, The Manhattan Transfer, as well as Steve Martin and John Lithgow. Some of the top performances scheduled for this fall include a concert by the Venice Baroque Orchestra, Doc Severinson and Viver Brasil. And don’t forget there are also some great nightclubs in the area and you may be inspired to go dancing after some of these dynamic performances. Miami has some great areas to shop while visiting the city. For the avid shopper, this is a must do while staying in the city. Take a break from the wind blown beaches and spend some time browsing the shops in areas like Lincoln Road South Beach . If you are staying in the south beach area of Miami you will have a straight shot walk to the Rodeo Drive of Florida.

South Beach’s Lincoln Road has become the very vision of what the original developer, Carl Fisher, had in mind. He wanted a shopping area that was filled with luxurious stores and galleries. It has always been a top shopping are for the city since the 1930′s. Each generation makes the street front more luxurious than the last.

It is a street that is closed to driving traffic allowing people to walk freely without the worry or the noise of car traffic. There are many wonderful shops as well as restaurants, cafes and clubs. This is a great spot to find a nice out door cafe for lunch or a romantic dinner. If you decide to make a whole day of it there are some spa salons, movie theatre and free WiFi if you need it. Take a break from the beach front of the 5 star hotels miami is known for and get some shopping done.

Miami has been rising consistently over the past decade as a world class city in terms of art. There are galleries and events in town that serve the local population, bringing them beautiful objects and provocative ideas. They also serve out of town guests, staying to enjoy the Miami luxury hotels and to check out what else the town might have to offer. More frequently, too, the work here has been pushing for international recognition, and it’s getting it.

That’s good news for the city’s artists, as well as for the audiences that benefit from a thriving art scene. It does take a village to make this kind of thing happen, and places like Miami’s Eazy Street Gallery are here to make it happen with style and energy. Eazy Street is a non-traditional space, and its rooted in the community in deep and exciting ways.

Last February, they participated as the first city for the 9th annual Art Battles Live . This event puts artists against each other to create work side by side in front of a live audience. ArtBattles is a larger collective that works to break down barriers among artists and galleries from all over. Miami’s connection to this operation is just another wonderful way of making something happen, in a city where wonderful things happen all the time.

Manhattan is Not a Scary Movie

New York City is a tough place to raise kids, but there’s something about the city that makes everyone at least a little bit funny. It’s impossible to live here without a sense of humor, and if one doesn’t have it, experience will build it in to the hard wiring. When it starts to happen, it’s a wonderful thing to see, because anyone who has an appreciation for life’s little absurdities is destined to live at least a little bit longer, or fuller.

The rising star that keeps on rising, Regina Hall was born in Washington, DC, but went to school in Manhattan, where NYU put her on the road toward a very busy life on movie and television sets. The time in New York was just enough to make her love it. Like anything that turns out well, New York would probably like to take credit for her sense of humor, too, but it’s apparent that her particular gift for provoking laughter is entirely self-propelled.

She’s been on a rather impressive roster of television shows, including Alley McBeal and NYPD Blue, but it’s her time spent on the sets of the Scary Movie movies that have gotten her the most recognition. It also may be what’s gotten her a boyfriend, as she and Damon Wayans have been seeing each other for what’s almost a decade now.

Visitors to the city can certainly come equipped with their own senses of humor, but they’re not a requirement for visiting the five star hotels Manhattan boasts. The city does start to rub off on everyone, just a little, even in a short amount of time. While few people might turn out leaving the city as funny as Regina Hall, or with the same apparent secret connections with the fountain of youth, there’s plenty of magic here that everyone will love.
