Tiger Woods Comes Back to Golf With More Respect

Monday, April 5th, 2010

I thought this was really nice. I know he has lied and cheated and really had no other choice but to just come out and apologize for it, but it is still nice when a famous person acknowledges their wrong doing and takes steps in a better direction.

Communities in Action

Monday, October 26th, 2009

With a rich urban cultural scene that brings in a host of splendid festivals, and a developing arts community, Oklahoma City is the largest city in the state, and has its foothold in the future.  It also is a wonderful place to celebrate and recreate the old-fashioned wild west heritage.  The combination of the old and the new help to make it a city that cares about its citizens.  Mary Myrick‘s work with Public Strategies is very rooted in this community, with two decades of experience here that began with the Cavs basketball team as one of its first clients.

Public Strategies, lead by Mary Myrick, continues to work with a diverse array of clients, from the Oklahoma Department of Human Services to the University of Oklahoma, demonstrating a remarkable ability to take on large-scale projects and implement them with quality and efficiency.  This is in large part due to her team of 150 employees, whose ranks are continuing to swell, and each member holding a very important key to the success of the company.  At Public Strategies, we meet the client where you are, using our expertise to make your own visions of improved organizational communication, project management, or public relations into a reality.  We are based in Oklahoma City, and dedicated to seeing it thrive, so that all the citizens can have better lives.

When the community is allowed to shine, the skills and talents of every individual are given a chance to show themselves, so that all of our contributions can help make the city grow.  Oklahoma’s rich past is not simply a tourist attraction, or a piece of folklore, but part of a continuous weave that speaks directly to the present moment.  With an eye always kept on the public good, we strive to help develop ideas and give you skills so that you can see them through every phase as your dreams turn into realities.

The Beloved New President of South Africa

Saturday, May 9th, 2009

The newly elected president of South Africa, Jacob Zuma, has stepped into office today, and is faced with many challenges. Almost 25 percent of the people in South Africa are unemployed and more than one thousand people a day are dying of AIDS. Zuma has made the promise to the people of his country, of increasing housing and the number of health clinics. He has also promised to solve the dilemma concerning the absence for many, of electricity and indoor plumbing. While acknowledging the current global economic crisis, he assured the people that South Africa’s economy is strong, and the government and local businesses such as the best Cape Town restaurants and market owners will continue to work on creating more jobs for those who need and want them.

His inauguration ceremony held today was a celebration. Zuma has almost gained the popularity of former president Nelson Mandela. Helicopters and planes flew over the ceremony with the South African flag trailing behind, bands played, cannons were fired. The thousands and thousands of people in attendance spontaneously broke into song as Zuma took the stage. When Zuma addressed Mandela, he bowed to his knees in a show of respect for the former, very well-loved, president.

Zuma himself, is respected by his peers, as a man who is very down to earth and is sincerely concerned with the well being of the country that he is now leading. Zuma comes from a modest background, growing up farming in Zulu. His father, who died when Zuma was a young boy, worked for many years as a police officer. He was raised by a single mother and never completed formal education as he went to work to help support the family at the age of 15. Later on he served time in the Robben Island jail, along with Nelson Mandela and other opponents of apartheid. He spent fifteen years in exile in Zambia and Mozambique when released from prison. Zuma is a leader of his people, because he is actually one of them.

Not Enough Drug Rehab Programs For Teens

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

Last month, the United Nations International Narcotics Control Board had good news to announce – the overall teen drug abuse rate in the United States has dropped by 24 percent since 2001. The report also said that in all young adults (defined as between the ages of 18 and 25) the abuse rate fell in all drug categories with the exception of pain relievers.

It’s unfortunate that news of this improvement had to be tempered with the distressing information that teenagers in America do not have enough drug treatment options to serve their needs. A Forbes.com article today reported on the national deficiency in the number of treatment centers that specifically treat adolescents. The article cites a recent study that claims “Only about 10 percent of the 1.4 million American teens with substance abuse problems receive treatment.” It’s humbling to realize that even though drug abuse among teens is going down in numbers, there are still over a million American teenagers out there who are suffering from substance abuse.

The reason why most teens don’t get the help they need is that there are few treatment centers that offer services to teens, and of those facilities only a percentage accepts people with a dual diagnosis or co-disorders. The article mentioned that compared to the number of treatment centers for adults, teens only have about 1/3 of the services that adults have. Without enough centers to service young adults, the problem may begin to grow again.

Quality of service is a major concern, as only 30 percent of over 150 centers that were evaluated managed to score as establishments of “high-quality”. The majority scored as only mediocre facilities. According to the research in the report that appeared in the Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment, high-quality drug rehab centers tend to be those with longer term, residential programs. The reason given is that residential treatment often offers a wider variety of services that meet youthful needs.

Customer Complaint Management

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

Customer complaint management is a vital component of organizations both in the private and public sector.  It can be viewed as feedback or information relating to your products and services.  Therefore this information should be properly managed.  The goal of customer complaint management is to effectively provide feedback to the client with a view to increasing customer satisfaction.

Satisfaction occurs when the members of the organization understand customer expectations and them work with them to improve service levels. The challenge arises when there are multiple departments interacting with customers and they each have their own agendas.  This is where organizational wide complaint management software is essential.

Complaints management software helps the organization in the following ways.  Complaint management gives the organization an opportunity to redeem itself in the eyes of the customer.  In other words it gives them a second chance to make things right.  It also helps to identify where improvements are needed and allows customers to play an important part in these improvements.  This is the philosophy behind continuous improvement.  Finally it helps to lighten the workload within the organization.

The key to customer complaint management is to truly listen.  Listen because the customers who complain are usually just the tip of the iceberg of customers who are dissatisfied.  It is important to gain an understanding of the complaints and make the changes to resolve them.

Cartographers Improve Quality of Maps

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

The maps of South America and other places that hang on the walls of many schools and even homes are much improved compared to years past. This is because companies that design maps now use highly skilled cartographers that are very knowledgeable about the features on maps.

For instance, maps of Afghanistan from several years ago would not have some of the cities that are now found on maps of this country. The cartographers decided back then that certain towns were too small to go on a map. Now, however, if the town is significant, it will be included.

Vietnam maps used to only have the capital Hanoi on it. Now the capital and other important cities are included. Rivers and other geographical features of importance are shown clearly.

With all of the improvements, it is a wonder that so many people to do know how to read maps.
